Gems

Gems are the sole currency in Growtopia (besides the imaginary currency used when trading items, or the Rarity rating). Gems can be obtained through in-app purchases, completing Tapjoy offers or through common aspects of gameplay, such as breaking blocks and harvesting trees.
People usually use gems for buying locks and items, as well as item packs. Most people save gems for events (Such as Valentine's Day, For the Valentine Pack)
The Tapjoy offer wall is accesible through the Growtopia Store. It allows the player to watch videos or install apps or by playing games using facebook to earn free gems for use during gameplay. Tapjoy is currently only available on the iOS and Android versions of the game.
Earning 2500 gems or more through Tapjoy or buying any in-app purchase makes the player a Supporter. Upon becoming a Supporter, the player unlocks the "Recycle" tool. This replaces the "Trash" tool in the player's inventory and allows them to recycle items to earn gems. When you recycle there is a random chance of getting a random amount of gems depending on the rarity.
Each type of block or tree in Growtopia drops a different amount of gems. This amount is usually influenced by the rarity of the block or item, but some blocks drop an unusually large amount of gems as they have been configured to. A good example of this is the Mystery Block. When one is broken, it can drop between 10-50 gems. Another example is the Pot O' Gold, an extremely rare item distributed during St. Patrick's Week, dropping up to 200 gems when broken. However, the destruction of these items is discouraged due to their high rarity and their resulting value when trading.
With a recent update, gems will group together if placed on top of each other. For example, if there are 4 gems and you drop 1 gem on the same space which the other gems are dropped, a blue gem will replace the 5 yellow gems. It's the same with red gems, green gems and purple gems.
Collecting gems gives you XP. Depending on the amount of Gems you pick up. so picking up a yellow one gives you one XP, one blue gives 5 XP, and so on. When dropping Gems with a sack o joy, each gem dropped makes you lose 1 XP. You can't go under 0 XP when dropping gems.

Farming
Farming is the process of harvesting a set amount of trees for a specific item then placing these items. Once you place you break said items for Gems and more seeds and you repeat the process.
A block is considered "farmable" if its drop chance is 8 or higher (as blocks have a 1 in 5 or 20% chance of dropping seeds, trees that can drop more than five blocks can drop more than one seed). This means that one can gain seeds and eventually have a larger amount of said block and a larger farm. Sadly, most blocks are not farmable. For more info on a block's drop chance check the page for that specific block.
You can do this with many different blocks, however, the recommended blocks for farming are mostly Blackrock Wall, Pinball Bumper, Chandelier and Venus Guytrap, as they drop a lot of gems when broken. Sugarcane also is a cheaper alternative. One of the most advanced farming tier is farmingChandelier blocks or High Tech Block or Gothic Building but.
The amount of gems you get when you break a block is based on the amount of gems when recyclling
Where are gems used for
Gems are usually used to buy various items in the store. But there are also other uses for the gems.
One example are Broadcasts. You can use 100 gems for a normal broadcast or a Super Broadcast where price changes with the amount of people on. But be informed, you will NOT be able to use these features unless you're level 20 or a supporter.
You can also you a sack o joy for dropping gems for giving away.
