Overview
The Asteroid is an item added on Night of the Comet. When you are on an Asteroid, you have the "floating" effects, like when you are standing on a Seagull. Asteroid trees can only be spliced on Night of the Comet. They are also crucial to the Hidden Riches update.

To grow, plant a Asteroid Seed. (Or splice a Starseed with a Seagull Seed)
