The lava block is one of the 4 common blocks when starting a world. The lava block is found near bedrock of the world, and is one of the many blocks that can kill/harm a player. Just dig down and eventually you will see red blochs of lava. The lava block, when touched, launched the player a few blocks up and to the side. The lava block does little damage and is rarely fatal (Unless one falls into a pit full of them or attempts to

The lava block is made from the Lava Seed, or can be found naturally.
