History
The Phonecats Hat was given to Phonecats (YouTube: phonecatss), known in-game as pcats, for helping to invite people to play the game in its early stages of development through YouTube and Twitch. The hat was given to Phonecats by ex-developer Mike Hommel, who left a comment on his video, expressing the latter's gratitude and telling the former to check his inventory.[1]
The item's old design was similar to the Nyan Hat, both of which were based on the Nyan Cat internet meme. The item's sprite was changed sometime between SummerFest 2013 and Rise of the Desert Dragons (a few months after Nyan Hat was replaced by Turtle Hat) in order to prevent any legal issue.[2][3]
